Why do we yawn?

Don't you ever think, why do we yawn? If yes, then had you ever tried to figure out the answer? Today I will reveal to you the reason behind yawning...

Why do we yawn?

Humans, cats, dogs, and other animals  yawn. The scientific word for yawning is oscitation. Just like many other concepts, the concept of yawning also has theories related to it. A theory states that, when we are bored, tired or sleepy, we yawn. During these states, our blood loses oxygen due to slow breathing. As during yawning, we take a deep breath of air, it helps in increasing oxygen levels and decreasing carbon dioxide levels from our body. However, there are no concrete proofs for it and so it is proved incorrect.

What is the real reason behind yawning?

Due to exhaustion, sleep deprivation etc. our brain's temperature increases. As a result our work efficiency decreases and our mood gets unstable.  However, our brain works best at certain temperatures. Recent research reports say that yawning regulates our brain's temperature. When we yawn, we stretch our jaw and push blood from blood vessels to the brain. We also inhale lot of air from mouth and nose. The air cools the blood that is going to the brain and therefore reduces the temperature of the brain.

What are some facts related to yawning?

This is the reason we yawn. According to recent studies, babies in mothers womb also yawn. However, the reason behind it is still not known.

Studies also prove that, humans are more likely to yawn when the outside air is cooler. Yawns play a significant role at that time. When the outside air is hot, it is less likely to cool down your blood temperature.

Conclusion

Conclusively, yawning is a strange and unpredictable involuntary action which is done to cool down the brain temperature that is raised due to exhaustion, sleep deprivation, etc.

Scientists have also proved that yawning is contagious. I will write a post on it some other day...
