Why do our knuckles crack?

Have your ever cracked your knuckles and the popping sound had fascinated you??? If yes, then today you will get to know the reason behind that sound...

Why do our knuckles crack?

If you know, not only our knuckles, but our other joints like knee, elbow, backbone, etc. also crack. There is a synovial sac present between all joints. There is a synovial fluid present in those sacs which is responsible for lubricating and cushioning the joints.

This fluids too contains many dissolved gases. When the sac is stretched, the gases come together forming a bubble and when the sac is further stretched, the bubble burst, which gives a satisfying popping sound.

Why don't our knuckles crack immediately after they are cracked?

Once you crack your knuckles, it takes 20-30 minutes for the gases to redissolve. During this time, your joints don't crack. Thus knuckles don't crack more than once at a time.

It is also believed that knuckle cracking causes arthritis (a medical condition in which joints get swollen and painful). But studies have proven that this myth is wrong.

Conclusion

Our knuckles crack because of popping of the bubble formed by stretching the synovial sac present near the joints for lubricating them. Knuckles don't crack more than once at a time as the bursted bubble needs to dissolve again for popping.

So now you can be free to crack your knuckles...
