Why does rain smell?
Rain doesn't come applying a perfume! But then, why does it smell so good when it rains? Why does rain smell?
The distinctive smell which frequently accompanies the first rain after a dry weather is scientifically called petrichor. It is a sweet smell which is also called as सोंधी सुगंध in hindi.
It basically comes from plants and bacteria called actinomycetes which live in the soil.
Now during a long dry spell in the summers, the plants release oils into the soil to block other seeds from germinating, thus reducing competition for water so that the plant gets water. Whereas, the actinomycetes produce various chemicals in the soil.
Now when rain hits the ground, it brings up the oils and the chemicals produced which then mix with air.
The combination of these chemicals along with the plant oils form the smell which we receive after the rain.
Wow! That was amazing. If you learnt something, share this with your friends...
Posts before October 2021 have been marked as "Old Posts". Less likely, but they might have out dated or incorrect information, ugly looking bits of code, no labels, etc. Don't get me wrong, many of these posts are top-notch and interesting too.
I thought it would be better not to delete or revamp these posts, even if they suck. The bitter truth is that old works always suck, but I take that as a positive tool to convey that I am growing. Besides there's no better way to showcase my journey without these old, messy, poorly written posts!
