Is local storage better or cloud storage?

What is local storage and cloud storage?

Local storage includes your hard wares like SD card, pen-drives, hard discs, etc. whereas cloud storage means storing your data and media via computing on the internet. Seagate, Transcend, SanDisk, etc. are some leading hard drive or local storage companies. Dropbox, pCloud, Google Drive, OneDrive, etc. are some famous cloud storage companies. But which one is better, cloud storage or local one?

What are advantages and disadvantages of cloud storage?

To understand which one is better, let us know the pros and cons of both type of storage. First let us see pros and cons of cloud storage:

Advantages of cloud storage:
  1. Cloud storage is connected to the internet. So the main benefit is that you can easily share your data with anyone you wish. This means that collaborative teams can work more efficiently.
  2. Secondly, if you loose your data even by mistake, or if you delete it accidentally, you always have a backup and can retrieve the lost data.
  3. They are extremely cheaper than the local storage. I mean if you buy a 16 GB pen-drive, you will get almost the same (15 GB) for free easily.
  4. Cloud storage also gives you increased capabilities like virtualization, web apps, etc.
Disadvantages of cloud storage:
  1. Security is the greatest challenge that you can't take risk about in cloud storage. Data thieves might hack our accounts and even a third party might access it.
  2. Secondly, if you want to access cloud storage, you need a continuous internet connection. It means that if you don't have an internet connection, then you can't watch a movie stored in the cloud storage.
  3. At times cloud storage can be slow as we need to upload and download data.

What are advantages and disadvantages of local storage?

Now let us see the pros and cons of local storage:

Advantages of local storage:
  1. Accessing data on local storage is much quicker than uploading and downloading the files.
  2. We have complete security control on the data storage and the accessibility.
Disadvantages of local storage:
  1. The biggest challenge is accessibility. This means you will need to carry the hard drive wherever you go to access it.
  2. Local storage is extremely expensive.
  3. There is lack of backup. So you would need to rely on cloud storage again for backup.
  4. Any damage to the hard drive will erase your data.

Conclusion:

With these immense advantages and disadvantages, it is still very hard to choose the right type of storage. It is really a hard decision to choose any one of it. It is better decision to use both the type of storage simultaneously. Store your important, personal and offline data on local storage and business related data and media on cloud storage.
