Why can't we see the sun with our naked eyes?

Even after a random look at the sun, we think that what's wrong in looking at the sun with naked eyes? But, when we actually do that, it hurts our eyes and our eyes water. So why can't we see the sun with our naked eyes??

Why can't we see the sun with our naked eyes?

The sun emits a tremendous amount of light. Besides this, it also emits ultraviolet radiation. When we look at the sun with our naked eyes, the ultraviolet radiation emitted by the sun, starts to burn the cornea (outermost membrane of the eye). Due to this burning sensation, our eyes produce tears and make them water. This causes photokeratitis (a painful eye condition caused due to exposure to UV rays).

After some watering, our brain understands the problem and sends signals to look some where else or to close the eyes. However, continuing to look at the sun may cause harm to the proteins in the eye lens and to the light sensitive cells on the retina. This may cause harmful medical conditions like solar retinopathy. This may even cause temporary or permanent blindness.

How are we able to see the sun during sunrise or sunset?

But then how are we able to see the sun during sunrise or during sunset??? During sunrise or sunset, the sun is near the horizon. The thick atmosphere near the horizon filters the harmful rays of the sun. Thus we can see the sun during the sunrise and sunset.

Conclusion

Conclusively, the sun is a source that emits tremendous amount of light energy which makes it impossible for us looking at them. And doing so (Which is not recommended) can prove fatal. Be sure that you don't see the sun with naked eyes. Always use special glasses for it...
