 Is rubbing your eyes good?

We usually rub our eyes due to lack of sleep or to get rid of dust, irritants, etc. This is done very often by us. But is it good for our eyes or bad? Let's see...

Sometimes rubbing our eyes for short periods are often good because it produces tears which lubricates our eyes. Rubbing even stimulates the vagus which successively slows down our heartbeat, helping relieve stress.

However, it's not good if done regularly. Firstly, continuous rubbing can cause the outer layer of our eyes called cornea to become thin, weak and conical in shape, causing a disease referred to as keratoconus, thus resulting in distorted vision. Secondly, if there's an irritant and that we attempt to remove it by rubbing, that irritant can scratch our cornea. Lastly, if people with glaucoma rub their eyes, it can cause extra increase in fluid pressure, further damaging the optic nerve, eventually resulting in blindness.
