With presence of many other gases in the air like nitrogen, argon, etc., why do we need only oxygen to survive??? Let's see...
Our whole body functions on the energy that we have. And where does this energy come from? From a process called cellular respiration. In this process, glucose is oxidized in presence of oxygen to give out energy. So if there is no oxygen, we would slowly be unable to function. So that one reason why we need oxygen.
Besides this, inside our body there are cellular processes going on continuously. They produce heat and keep our body warm. These cellular processes need oxygen. So now, without oxygen, you won't be able to keep your body temperature constant.
Moreover, the oxygen we breathe bonds with hemoglobin. Other gases dont bond with hemoglobin. Yes, Carbon dioxide does, but the bond of CO2 and hemoglobin can kill us.
So oxygen is important...
